Q&A with Rosh » Ask Rosh

Q My child is not performing well in school. He is intelligent but when it comes to reading or doing his homework he just refuses to do it. He often says he has a headache or is tired and will even go to sleep. We have tried using a cane to threaten him but it hasn’t helped. My friends and his teachers say he is just naughty and he will out grow this phase. Please help.

A Dear Parent,
Perhaps your son has a learning difficulty, being tired and even going off to sleep in spite of being threatened means that maybe he is really having trouble and needs professional evaluation by a educational therapist. Being smart says it all. Some learning difficulties such as dyslexia are known to create such difficulties as u have mentioned. A child cannot out grow a learning difficulty. Intervention instead, can help. Please email Sri Rafelsia for a consultation so we can address this learning difficulty in more depth to help your child.

Q My kindergarten aged child is having trouble learning to read and write. His hand writing is very poor and we do not know what to do.

A Dear Parent,
Well this child needs early intervention so that we can correct these difficulties before he reaches school age and has more trouble. These are learning difficulties. Please read articles on specific learning difficulties – dyslexia and email Sri Rafelsia for further discussion.

Q Our son has been diagnosed as being globally delayed. Doctors say he has intellectual impairment and as such will develop slower than other children. We are worried. Is there anything we can do to help him developed better?

A Dear Mom and Dad,
Yes there is a lot that can be done to help your child develop more effectively. Early intervention programmes aim to do this. We need details of his current developmental stage and then a progamme can be drawn up to help him along. There is no quick-fix but hard work on your part and our will surely help him. Early development between birth and 8 years can be made full use off and create developmental achievements that cant be achieved at any other age except now.
